Deformation and mixing of coexisting shapes in neutron-deficient polonium isotopes

2015

Coulomb-excitation experiments are performed with postaccelerated beams of neutron-deficient Po196,198,200,202 isotopes at the REX-ISOLDE facility. A set of matrix elements, coupling the low-lying states in these isotopes, is extracted. In the two heaviest isotopes, Po200,202, the transitional and diagonal matrix elements of the 2+1 state are determined. In Po196,198 multistep Coulomb excitation is observed, populating the 4+1,0+2, and 2+2 states. The experimental results are compared to the results from the measurement of mean-square charge radii in polonium isotopes, confirming the onset of deformation from Po196 onwards. Three model descriptions are used to compare to the data. Calculati…

Shape coexistence in odd-mass Au isotopes: Determination of the excitation energy of the lowest intruder state in ^{179}Au

2011

Abstract Phenomenon of the shape coexistence has been investigated in 17979Au100. This very neutron-deficient isotope, 18 neutrons away from the stable gold isotope 19779Au118, was studied by a combination of α-decay and isomer-decay spectroscopy employing the ritu gas-filled separator and the great focal-plane spectrometer at the University of Jyvaskyla. A new isomer with t 1 / 2 = 328 ( 2 ) ns was observed and states associated with π d 3 / 2 − 1 , π s 1 / 2 − 1 , π f 7 / 2 + 1 and π h 9 / 2 + 1 structures were revealed. The implications of these results on the systematics of π h 9 / 2 + 1 and π f 7 / 2 + 1 intruder structures in the odd-mass gold isotopes are discussed. The minimum of th…

Decay spectroscopy of Pb97182179 and evidence for a 9/2− intruder state in Tl98181179

2017

The very neutron-deficient isobars Pb-179 and Tl-179 have been produced using the fusion-evaporation reactions Pd-104(Kr-78,xpyn), where x = 2. The gas-filled separator RITU was employed to transpo ...

Precision mass measurements of Fe67 and Co69,70 : Nuclear structure toward N=40 and impact on r -process reaction rates

2020

Accurate mass measurements of neutron-rich iron and cobalt isotopes $^{67}\mathrm{Fe}$ and $^{69,70}\mathrm{Co}$ have been realized with the JYFLTRAP double Penning-trap mass spectrometer. With novel ion-manipulation techniques, the masses of the $^{69,70}\mathrm{Co}$ ground states and the $1/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ isomer in $^{69}\mathrm{Co}$ have been extracted for the first time. The measurements remove ambiguities in the previous mass values and yield a smoother trend on the mass surface, extending it beyond $N=40$. The moderate $N=40$ subshell gap has been found to weaken below $^{68}\mathrm{Ni}$, a region known for shape coexistence and increased collectivity. The excitation energy for…

Measurement of the Spin and Magnetic Moment ofMg31: Evidence for a Strongly Deformed Intruder Ground State

2005

Unambiguous values of the spin and magnetic moment of $^{31}\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g}$ are obtained by combining the results of a hyperfine-structure measurement and a $\ensuremath{\beta}$-NMR measurement, both performed with an optically polarized ion beam. With a measured nuclear $g$ factor and spin $I=1/2$, the magnetic moment $\ensuremath{\mu}(^{31}\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g})=\ensuremath{-}0.88355(15){\ensuremath{\mu}}_{N}$ is deduced. A revised level scheme of $^{31}\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g}$ ($Z=12$, $N=19$) with ground state spin/parity ${I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=1/{2}^{+}$ is presented, revealing the coexistence of 1p-1h and 2p-2h intruder states below 500 keV. Advanced shell-model calculations and th…

Evolution of deformation in the neutron-rich Zr region from excited intruder state to the ground state.

1994

Strong evidence for the existence of previously postulated deformed excited states in $^{98}\mathrm{Zr}_{58}$ has been obtained by an accurate measurement of the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}^{2}$(${0}_{3}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${0}_{2}^{+}$) value for the decay of the second excited ${0}^{+}$ state at 1436 keV. In the neighboring isotope $^{99}\mathrm{Zr}_{59}$, at the edge of the region of strong ground-state deformation, evidence is found for a rotational band built on the state at 614 keV. Systematics of the excitation energies of the deformed states in Zr nuclei and their Sr neighbors show that the apparent sudden onset of deformation is explained by the steady lowering of a stro…

Investigations into the alpha-decay of 195At

2003

The low-energy nuclear structure and decay properties of the neutron-deficient isotopes 195At and 191Bi have been studied. 195At was produced in the reaction 142Nd(56Fe,p2n)195At and 191Bi as the daughter activity of 195At. The activities were implanted in a position-sensitive silicon detector after being separated from the primary beam by a gas-filled recoil separator. The 1/2+ intruder state was determined to be the ground state in 195At with an alpha-decay energy of E α = 6953(3) keV and a half-life T 1/2 = 328(20) ms. Another state with an alpha-decay energy E α = 7075(4) keV and a half-life T 1/2 = 147(5) ms was found to decay to a 148.7(5) keV excited state in 191Bi for which a spin a…

Half-life and configuration of the 1/2+ intruder state in203Bi

1984

The decay properties of theJπ=1/2+,Eexc=1,098 keV state in203Bi were studied. The state was populated via the204Pb(p, 2n) reaction and the activity was studied with the ion guide isotope separator on-line system IGISOL. The half-life of the 1/2+ state was measured to beT1/2=303 ±5 ms. From this value the partial half-lives of the three depopulating branches 1/2+ →7/2− (E3), 1/2+→5/2− (E3 +M2) and 1/2+→9/2 g.s. − (M4) were deduced. Since all the transitions are configuration forbidden in first order, a detailed study of second-order shell-model configuration mixing could be performed.

Proton Decay of an Intruder State inB185i

1996

The new proton radioactivity ${}^{185m}\mathrm{Bi}$ has been observed, produced via the ${}^{95}\mathrm{Mo}{(}^{92}\mathrm{Mo},pn{)}^{185}\mathrm{Bi}$ reaction. Its decay proceeds from the low-lying ${\frac{1}{2}}^{+}$ intruder state in ${}^{185}\mathrm{Bi}$ to the ${}^{184}\mathrm{Pb}$ ground state with the emission of a proton of energy $1.585\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.009\mathrm{MeV}$ and a half-life of $44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}16\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$. This marks the first observation of proton radioactivity above the $Z\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}82$ closed shell, and it has been used to obtain the admixture of a ${0}^{+}$ intruder state in ${}^{184…
